Freedom From Debt

Back in 2011, we found ourselves in a financial mess. We were deeply in debt (to the tune of over $200,000 not including our mortgage) and we were feeling completely overwhelmed and ashamed of the hole we had dug for ourselves. Around that time, my husband’s brother asked us if we had ever heard of Dave Ramsey.

I vaguely remembered seeing the guy one time on Oprah, but that was about it.

“He says personal finance is 20% head knowledge and 80% behavior.”

That made me stop and think. When I looked at how we had been behaving with money, it was clear that our own actions had created our mess. We were the problem.

I got a copy of The Total Money Makeover and read it cover to cover. At the time my husband and I were living in my parents’ home with our 2 small kids. We had to overhaul our entire life, which felt impossible at the time.

Enter Financial Peace University. It’s a class that Dave Ramsey put together that walks you through the baby steps of getting out of debt and taking control of your life. We took the class, got gazelle intense, and turned our life around. Within a year we had moved back into our house, doubled our income, and paid off the debt.

But the benefits of taking the class didn’t stop there. As we had gone into debt, I had packed on the pounds and found myself in a place where I was sedentary and obese. I eventually took the lessons I learned about getting out of debt and applied them to weight loss and maintenance. I got down to a healthy weight and have kept it off for years. We also applied the lessons in other areas, like entrepreneurship, which eventually led to our 2-year adventure in full-time RVing.

Because of the impact Financial Peace University has made on our lives, my husband and I are volunteering as coordinators for a virtual class that begins this Saturday. We will meet at 10 am eastern time for the next 9 weeks via Zoom. The way the class works is that you’ll watch the video lesson on your own during the week, and then we’ll come together on Saturday mornings for discussion and encouragement.

If you’re in a financial mess, or if you simply want to do a little bit better with your money, come join our class. Space is limited, but as of this writing, we still have a few spots left.

Steps to take:

  1. Click this link to sign up for our class: https://www.financialpeace.com/classes/1122099
  2. Go watch lesson one before Saturday morning.
  3. Join us via the Zoom meeting link on Saturday morning at 10 am. (We email you the meeting link after you’ve signed up.)

PS: My husband J and I are going live today on YouTube at 2 pm to talk about the money mistakes we’ve made in marriage, and how getting on the same page with money helped us. Here’s the link: https://youtu.be/6fCt25rOlvQ
